The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced Monday the 207 feature films that will be considered for Best Picture, two days before voting begins for the 2025 Oscar nominations.
There are 323 feature films eligible for the Academy Awards, but only 207 met the eligibility requirements for the Best Picture competition.
As the Academy stated in a press release, “To be eligible for consideration in the General Entry category, under rules put in place for the 97th Academy Awards, a feature film must be located in at least one of the six U.S. metropolitan areas. Must be released in commercial movie theaters” Region: Los Angeles County. New York City. bay area. Chicago, Illinois. Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas. It will be held in Atlanta, Georgia from January 1, 2024 to December 31, 2024, completing a minimum qualifying run of seven consecutive days at the same venue. Feature films must have a running time of at least 40 minutes. ”
However, the qualifications for Best Picture are different. In addition to meeting the general submission criteria, films under consideration must submit the confidential Academy Representation and Inclusion Standards (RAISE) form. From there, the film must meet two of the four RAISE requirements in addition to the expanded theatrical release eligibility requirements. This includes seven consecutive or non-consecutive theatrical days in 10 of the top 50 U.S. markets, up to 45 days. A few days after the first release in 2024. ”
“Eligibility for the Best Picture category may change if films later this year do not complete their scheduled expanded theatrical run by January 24, 2025,” the Academy added.
RAISE requirements focus on diversity and inclusion. All nominees for Best Picture are eligible for on-screen representation (either in subject matter or cast), diversity in department heads (at least two department heads from underserved groups, or underrepresented groups).
