The Chicago Bears are moving fairly quickly to sign former Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy. Hours after he and the Cowboys parted ways on Monday, it was reported that McCarthy had already set up an interview with the Bears. On Tuesday, it was revealed that the Bears would bring McCarthy in for an in-person interview at Halas Hall, the second in-person meeting of this coaching cycle. However, it looks like this meeting will be more than just a regular interview.
According to Mark “Sylvie” Silverman of ESPN 1000’s “Waddle and Sylvie Show,” the Bears will then take McCarthy out to dinner and have a sit-down meal at a local restaurant. “From what I’m getting, the plan is to wine and dine with him afterward, and they’re setting up a room to have dinner with him,” Sylvie said on Tuesday’s show. spoke.
McCarthy will join former Carolina Panthers and Washington Commanders head coach Ron Rivera as the only candidates who have received in-person interviews thus far. Silvey believes the Bears only met Rivera at Halas Hall and did not take him out to dinner, as they did with McCarthy. Rivera’s interview took place on Sunday.
The front office’s willingness to take McCarthy out to dinner afterward could be a strong indication of how they feel about him as a head coaching candidate. The team still has a long way to go before deciding who their next head coach will be, but at least McCarthy appears to be near the top of the list. The 61-year-old has a career record of 174-112-2 with the Green Bay Packers and Cowboys, winning 11 postseason games and winning Super Bowl 45.
