Apple is best known for its iPhone and MacBook, but the Cupertino-based technology giant has sought to diversify its revenue streams over the years. Vision Pro was one such attempt, but so far it has had limited success on that front. Apple is currently considering growth opportunities in three areas: artificial intelligence, robotics, and smart homes, according to a new report from Bloomberg’s Mark Garman.
It will take time for artificial intelligence and robotics to bear fruit, but the Tim Cook-led company is now reportedly focused on the smart home space in 2025, with its first products expected next year. It has the potential to become a smart home hub using AI.
Apple’s smart home hub plans:
Garman said the smart home hub could include a 6-inch display and a new operating system designed to control home appliances, run FaceTime and play videos. Apple is also said to be developing new home security cameras that work with smart hubs. Apple is reportedly deep into developing a home camera, which could debut after the smart home hub.
Apple is also said to be working on another smart doorbell that supports facial recognition. The doorbell connects wirelessly to a deadbolt lock and is said to automatically unlock the door by simply scanning a homeowner’s face, similar to how Face ID works on the iPhone.
The doorbell may also support many of the third-party locks already on the market that support Apple’s HomeKit protocol. Apple can also partner with certain lock manufacturers to provide complete systems from day one.
Apple’s next smart doorbell is said to be in the early stages of development and could be released as early as the end of 2025. Upcoming smart doorbells are expected to have strong competition from the likes of Amazon Ring and Google Nest.
