Vienna, February 7 (UN Information Services) – The United Nations Food, Agriculture and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the United Nations Space Agency (UNOOSA) today published its latest collaboration, “Utilizing Space Technology for Agricultural Development.” I’ve started something. The significant growth of affordable, accessible data and information allows for more timely and effective disaster response. Satellite imaging, Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS), and their integrated applications are revolutionizing agriculture. Practical examples include monitoring crop health, managing water resources, predicting weather patterns, responding to crises, and empowering local farmers and international policymakers.
Developed through a UN interagency mechanism on space-related activities called UN-SPACE, this joint report is formal during a 62-second session of the Committee on the Scientific and Technical Subcommittee on the Peaceful Use of Space. It was launched in (Copuos held in Vienna).
FAO and Unosa highlight the need for greater international collaboration, capacity building and policy innovation to maximize the benefits of space technology in agriculture.
Unosa Director Aarti Holla-Maini said: These solutions need to be scaled, promoted and replicated to empower all stakeholders (from farmers on the ground to relevant government ministers) and utilize space technology for socioeconomic prosperity and development. Unosa’s program on space applications has been building awareness and national capacity for leveraging space technology in agriculture, water and related domains over the years. Together with FAO, we are committed to advancing and enabling these technologies across all continents, promoting a food-secure future for all. ”
Emphasizing the importance of innovation and partnerships, the director of Lifeng Li, FAO’s Land and Moisture Division, said: It highlights the sustainable use of natural resources to achieve global food security, in line with FAO’s strategic goals. ”
