Mel Gibson has given an update on the much-delayed sequel to his 2004 Biblical blockbuster The Passion of the Christ.

On Joe Rogan’s podcast, he said that production on the film, which has been in development since at least 2016, could begin in 2026.

“I hope sometime next year. It’s an acid trip, so a lot is required,” he said, adding that the script, which Gibson is co-writing with Randall Wallace, “is something I’ve never read before.” Never,” he added.

“My brother and I and Randall got together on this. So there’s some great minds coming together, but there’s also some crazy stuff,” he said. “And I think in order to really tell this story properly, you really have to start with the fall of the angels. So you’re in a different place, a different realm. You have to go to hell.” .”

Gibson also announced the film’s official title as “The Resurrection of Christ.”

Last year, it was revealed that Gibson had been scouting filming locations in Europe, reportedly touring Malta before visiting various ancient cities in southern Italy’s Puglia region.

In a 2022 interview with the National Catholic Register, Gibson said that “Resurrection” is “not a linear story,” adding, “There is a central event that I’m trying to tell, and other events surrounding it in the future. “We need to put all the events in order,” he added. When you think about the past and other realms, it becomes a bit of science fiction. ”

“The Passion of the Christ,” directed by Gibson and depicting Jesus’ last days on earth up to his crucifixion, grossed approximately $612 million worldwide, making it the highest-grossing film in history. It became an independent film. The film was considered anti-Semitic due to the implication that Jewish leaders were responsible for Jesus’ death. However, the controversy sparked interest, with the church reserving an entire theater for its members.
