Microsoft’s Nadella promises $3 billion AI investment in India

Microsoft plans to spend $3 billion to expand its cloud computing and artificial intelligence capabilities in India, targeting the world’s most populous country to boost revenue.

CEO Satya Nadella addressed startup founders and executives from technology companies including Wipro and Cognizant Technology Solutions at an event in southern India’s Bangalore on Tuesday. promised to invest.

The country of 1.4 billion people has emerged as an AI battleground, and CEOs from Nvidia Inc.’s Jensen Huang to Advanced Micro Devices Inc.’s Lisa Su have visited in recent months. “The uptake of AI in India is impressive,” says Nadella.

Nadella posted online on Monday a photo of his meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. “We are excited to further strengthen our efforts to make India AI-first,” he said at X. The Prime Minister responded, “I am pleased to learn about Microsoft’s ambitious expansion and investment plans in India.”

Under Mr. Nadella’s management, Redmond, Washington-based Microsoft has pushed to commercialize AI. Last week, the company announced plans to invest $80 billion to build data centers that will provide critical infrastructure for companies to deploy AI systems and tools.

The tech giant has already made major investments in Nadella’s home country of India, employing more than 23,000 people in cities including tech hubs Bangalore and Hyderabad. The CEO said on Tuesday that Microsoft is committed to providing AI training to 10 million people in the country by 2030.
