Jio Star applies for increase in broadcasting fees

Jio Star, the newly formed entity from the merger of Star India and Viacom18, has applied for broadcast fees and established itself as a premium broadcaster in the industry. The broadcaster has produced 83 packs of 134 channels, including 85 standard definition (SD). , 44 high-definition (HD) channels and 5 free-to-air (FTA) channels.

Apart from Star India and Viacom18 channels, the bouquet also includes 19 news channels from Network18 and infotainment channels from AETN18, a joint venture between Network18 and A+E Networks.

As per the Reference Interconnect Offer (RIO), Star Value Pack (SVP) Hindi and SVP Hindi Basic Pack for Standard Definition (SD) channels have been priced at Rs 110 each. This is 18% more expensive than the separate Hindi base packs combined. Star India and Viacom18 were priced at Rs 59 and Rs 34 respectively.

The station offers around 30 channels across general entertainment, movies, infotainment, children’s and sports genres. We have also created bouquet options for regional languages ​​like Marathi, Gujarati, Bengali, Odia, Kannada, Telugu, Tamil and Malayalam.

Rivals Sony Pictures Networks India (SPNI) and Zee Entertainment Enterprises (ZEEL) have also increased base bouquet prices by more than 10% in RIO. The final price increase will depend on negotiations between broadcasters and distributors, industry sources said. “Now that all the major broadcasters have submitted RIOs, we will work with them to negotiate to ensure that the burden is eased for consumers,” said a TV distribution executive.

The MRP for Jio Star’s entertainment and sports channels has been set at Rs 19, which is the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India’s (TRAI) regulatory cap.

Star FTA pack includes Star Utsav Movies, Colors Cineplex Bollywood, Colors Cineplex Superhits, News18 India and Sports18 Khel. Previously, 4 out of 5 channels were paid channels except Sports18 Khel.

Jio Star is India’s largest broadcaster with channels like Star Plus, Colors, Star Gold, and Star Sports. It owns the cricket rights to major events such as the Indian Premier League (IPL) and events organized by the International Cricket Council (ICC) and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), and all broadcasters. SPNI’s Happy India Smart Hindi pack is now priced at Rs 54 from Rs 48 earlier. However, the bouquet also includes a Hindi movie channel, Sony Max 1. Zee Family Pack Hindi SD (now called Zee All in One Pack Hindi SD) is now priced at Rs 53, up from Rs 47 earlier, and includes entertainment in English. Channel G Cafe.

Total subscription revenue of top broadcasters like Jio Star, Sony, Zee and Sun TV stood at Rs 17,842 crore in FY24, up 4.2% year-on-year.
