Domestic box office revenue exceeded $8.5 billion, ending the year with a decline of just 4%. In 2024, the number of theatrical releases increased, reaching the highest level since 2019, with approximately 650 films released. Inside Out 2 ($652.9 million) took the domestic crown, followed by Deadpool & Wolverine ($636.7 million) and Wicked ($432.9 million). As the new year dawns, hopes are high for theaters to be full in 2025, the best year yet post-pandemic.

Movie theaters will have to wait until February for the first tentpole of the year (Captain America: A Brave New World) and will likely encounter the traditional January lull, with a release date of late 2024. will be dominated by holdover titles such as “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” and “Mufasa: The Lion King.” , will compete against a wide range of smaller new releases and award nominees. Among this month’s biggest releases, Universal’s release of Leigh Whannell’s “The Wolfman” and the animated adaptation of the popular children’s graphic novel series “Dogman” are expected to lead the way.

Den of Thieves 2: Pantera |Lionsgate

January 10th

January’s first major release saw the unexpected sequel to Den of Thieves, which opened to $15.2 million in mid-January 2018 and ultimately grossed $44.9 million domestically and $80.5 million worldwide. Masu. Den of Thieves 2: Pantera sees a gang of LAPD officers head to Europe to stop a diamond heist. Den of Thieves has garnered a cult following in the streaming market since its release, opening a second chapter that has the potential to gain viewers during a quiet period in the market. Possible comps include 2023’s Plane ($10.2 million domestic opening, $32.1 million domestic total), another Gerard Butler-starring action movie released by Lionsgate in January.

The studio has released only two films that grossed more than $10 million, “The Strangers: Chapter One” ($11.8 million) and “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever” ($10.7 million). I’m trying to get over a down year. There hasn’t been a new, action-oriented, male-biased movie since November’s Gladiator II (which opened with $55 million domestically), and the first film, Den of Thieves, is gaining streaming viewers. The acquisition could help Pantera find an audience.

Wolf ManUniversal Pictures/Blumhouse

January 17th

Director Leigh Whannell’s second reinterpretation of the classic Universal horror film follows 2020’s The Invisible Man. Originally scheduled for release in October 2024, Wolf Man will be released in January, so there will be little competition from other horror titles. Universal’s big first deal with Blumhouse Productions resulted in the aforementioned The Invisible Man, which premiered in February 2020 for $28.2 million and went on to gross $70.4 million. This figure was affected by the pandemic and three industry-wide shutdowns. A few weeks into the run. In June of the following year, Blumhouse’s The Black Phone ($90.1 million domestic/$161.4 million), also directed by Whannell, was released.

According to the synopsis, Blake (Christopher Abbott), a husband and father from San Francisco, inherits his childhood home in rural Oregon. He convinces his wife, Charlotte (Julia Garner), to leave the city and visit the area with their young daughter, Ginger (Matlida Firth).

Flight risks | Lionsgate

January 24th

Mark Wahlberg plays a pilot transporting an air marshal (Michelle Dockery) and a fugitive (Topher Grace) who is preparing to testify in a high-profile criminal case. Originally scheduled for release last October, “Flight Risk” found a late January slot that could help the action movie find an audience. This is Mel Gibson’s first directorial role since 2016’s “Hacksaw Ridge,” which had a domestic opening of $15.1 million and a domestic total of $67.2 million.

The action-thriller “Den of Thieves: Pantera” (also produced by Lionsgate) has a two-week release date, and it wasn’t until “Love Hurts” that an action-oriented film was widely released in theaters. There’s probably not much competition for this movie’s opening frame. “Captain America: Brave New World” debuts on February 7th and Valentine’s Day.

Companion | Warner Brothers

January 31st

According to the logline, New Line Cinema, the studio behind “The Notebook,” and the creators of “Barbarian” ($40.8 million domestic/$45.3 million worldwide) sincerely wanted us to experience a new kind of love story. We welcome you. Directed by Drew Hancock in his feature debut, the film also stars Sophie Thatcher (The Heretic, $27.7 million domestic/$43.9 million worldwide; The Boogeyman, $43.2 million domestic/$67.3 million worldwide). , Jack Quaid, and Lucas Gage. Movie fans are encouraged to “Text 978-878-5683 to find your buddy today.”

When a police dog and a human police officer’s owners are injured on the job, life-saving surgery fuses them together and Dogman is born. According to the synopsis, Dogman embraces a new identity, thwarts the evil plots of feline supervillain Petey the Cat (Pete Davidson), and impresses the Chief (Lil Rel Howery). struggle to give. “Dogman” is directed by Peter Hastings.
