DC Studios co-head James Gunn has defended the postponement of the Batman sequel to 2027.

Warner Bros. announced Friday that the release date of director Matt Reeves’ 2022 The Batman sequel has been pushed back to October 1, 2027, with some fans sharing their disappointment on social media. . But Gunn sought to allay their concerns, pointing out that large gaps between films are “fairly common.”

“To be fair, it’s common for sequels to have gaps of five years or more,” Gunn wrote in the thread. “7 years between Alien and Alien. 14 years between The Incredibles. 7 years between the first two Terminators. 13 years between Avatar. 36 years gap between Top Gun. And Of course, there’s six years between Guardians volumes 2 and 3.

With Reeves still writing the script, the Batman sequel is expected to go into production in the third quarter of 2025. Although the film is not part of the DC Universe that Gunn and his DC partner Peter Safran are building, the two are collaborating on directing the project.

“Matt is completely committed to making the best movie possible, but no one can predict exactly how long it takes to write a script,” the Superman director said. he said on Friday. “Once the script is complete, a major film takes about two years for pre-production, shooting and post-production.”

The currently untitled Batman sequel (previously called The Batman: Part II) will see Robert Pattinson return to the title role. The first film was a critical and commercial success, grossing over $772 million worldwide.
