There are certainly many things to reflect on as we enter the new year. As we look back at 2024’s standout moments in television, music, film, and pop culture, we’d like to use this moment to shine a spotlight on fashion as well. As style-obsessed editors, we’re always on the lookout for the latest trends. So, to provide some fresh inspiration, I asked my colleagues to share the outdated aesthetics we’re bidding farewell to in 2025, and the ones we’re most looking forward to adopting in their place.
According to their insights, this next chapter is about embracing comfort and timelessness, and introducing some unexpected items to complete your collection. Want to jump in? From jeans to shoes, scroll through to see exactly which trends ELLE editors are ditching and replacing next year.
Out: baggy jeans
Type: Stretch pants
“I dare say I’m officially ready to put my baggy jeans in the back of my closet in favor of a sleek, fitted silhouette, especially skinny pants that hug my body. We can all use a comforting hug to get us through the challenges of the new year, as seen in the stretchy trousers worn by models at the Prada 2025 runway show. It immediately comes to mind, but I am Johnson’s resort 2025 lookbook inspired her outfits. Similarly, at the office, she paired an extra-long version of the narrow trend with a ladylike jacket and pointed-toe kitten heels peeking out from under the hemline. ” — Alexis Bennett Parker, Commerce Content Lead.
Out: Lug sole shoes
Type: sophisticated riding boots
“As a short girl, I tend to wear shoes that make me look taller. But I swapped out the chunky lug soles for riding boots to get serious about riding like the models at Ralph Lauren’s Hamptons show. I’m ready. Call me Kate Middleton.”—Claire Stern, Digital Director.
Out: Leopard print
Color: Snakeskin and zebra print
“I say this out of love for all things Leopard, but in 2025 it’s over for me. Classic, to be sure, but reaching a ubiquity dangerously close to the basics. Just because. So for Spring/Summer 2025, I’ll be opting for other animal prints like Schiaparelli’s zebra and Dries Van Noten’s snakeskin. I love elevating animal prints by choosing sophisticated silhouettes like bags and modernizing them with polarized patterns by topping them with modern sculptural jewelry.” —Madison Rexroth, Accessories Editor.
Out: Movie goods
Currently being held: Unique fashion collaboration
“I’m wearing influence when I say this, but I have to tell you the truth. First it was Barbie, now it’s Wicked. I think I’m tired of fashion movies and crossovers. I’m sure I’m not the only one who doesn’t want a movie title as a logo, right? I’d love to see more cool brand collaborations like Collina Strada and Baggu, or Harry Styles and JW Anderson. ”—Meg Donohue, Fashion Commerce Associate Editor
Out: sky high heels
In: minimalist slingback
“I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I’m prepared to hang up my impractical heels in 2024. And I’m not saying all heels. Just enough to run around New York City. Honestly, I used to be the girl who used to walk around the subway in high heels. But in 2025, comfort comes first and we embrace everyday elegance with sophisticated slingbacks. ” — Alexis Bennett Parker, Commerce Content Lead
