What will you watch this weekend?

One of my favorite Netflix shows is returning this weekend, so it feels like a bit of an early Christmas present. Dear reader, the holiday season is here! It’s the beginning of winter break for students around the world, and as the saying goes, Christmas is right around the corner. As they say, everything is coming at you fast. This year has gone by so quickly. Time waits for no one.
Every week, I search for all the best shows and movies coming to streaming (and in theaters) and share them with you in this friendly neighborhood streaming guide. Sometimes we include things that are new but not well-received by critics or viewers, but we think you should know all the information. After all, you can’t describe the taste. One person’s treasure is another person’s trash.
Surprisingly, there aren’t that many Christmas-themed shows or movies coming out this weekend, but of course there are plenty of classics that are perfect for holiday fun. If we missed something in this guide, feel free to send us a tip on Twitter, Instagram, Bluesky, or Facebook.
Alright, let’s jump right in!

New and noteworthy information this weekend (12/13/24)
Dragon Prince Final Season (Netflix)
The final season of my favorite Netflix animated series is approaching. The Dragon Prince dropped all nine episodes of Season 7 on Thursday, but I’m still watching it, unless Netflix decides to update it with another story set in the same fantasy world. I’m worried that the story is coming to an end. If you’re a fan of Avatar: The Last Airbender, give this fun series a try. Fun for the whole family.
Juror #2 (maximum)
Clint Eastwood’s latest film received little attention when it was released in theaters. In Juror #2, Nicholas Hoult (recently seen as Lex Luthor in the new Superman trailer) faces a particularly harrowing moral dilemma while serving on a jury for a crime he may have committed. I’m playing a juror.
Beast Game (Prime Video)
Mr. Beast is a top dog on YouTube and is always known for his games and giveaways. Now, he’s taking his brand to Prime Video’s Beast Games. The show sees 1,000 contestants take on a variety of challenges to win prizes, delighting young people around the world. But many young people will wonder why it’s not on YouTube instead.
What if…? Season 3 (Disney+)
The Marvel animated series, which depicts alternate versions of the stories of various MCU characters, is returning with Season 3. I wasn’t very interested in this, but it contains some great ideas in the little I’ve seen.
Six Triple Eight (Netflix)
The story of the only black female U.S. Army female unit stationed overseas will be of interest to history buffs who love World War II movies. Unfortunately, it has a pretty poor critic score of 48% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Virgin River Season 6 (Netflix)
To be honest, I’ve never even heard of Virgin River, but season 6 is on Netflix (which is rare these days), so I’m sure it has an avid audience. Loyal viewers are probably pretty excited about the show’s return.
Raid (peacock)
This has an interesting premise. Stephanie Hsu plays a woman named Ruby who discovers that all of her ex-partners have died in unusual and suspicious ways. She must go back through her “sex timeline” to discover the truth.
Earth Abides (MGM+)
I keep forgetting to include this new post-apocalyptic series in my guide every week. Earth Abides debuted on MGM+ immediately after the FROM season 3 finale. I haven’t seen it yet (part of me is burnt out on this genre), but many readers have recommended it to me. Vikings fans will recognize Alexander Ludwig as lead Isherwood Williams. Ludwig played Bjorn Lodbrok in Vikings. His father, Ragnar, also appears in the ongoing series. Travis Fimmel plays the main antagonist in Dune: Prophecy, which concludes this weekend on HBO and Max.
Thing 2 (Peacock)
I thought the first Sing was cute, but I couldn’t get my hands on Sing 2. You can now stream popular children’s movies on Peacock. In fact, you can stream it on Peacock this Sunday.
Anora (VOD)
I had never heard of Anora before, but I saw the trailer today and it was great. The film is directed by Sean Baker, who also made the wonderful and heart-breaking film The Florida Project. This looks like Pretty Woman on steroids. I’ve heard great things about it, so I’m tempted to buy it, even though it’s currently available on VOD and costs $20.
Carry On (Netflix)
I included this last week, but I just saw the movie and wrote a review. It’s one of the only Christmas movies released at the moment, so I’m including it again because not only is it timely, but it’s also a lot of fun. Admittedly, this is more of a basic thriller, but it managed to hold my attention and keep me feeling suspenseful throughout. A fun time.
Contents broadcast every week
Dune: Prophecy ends this Sunday. To be honest, I’m tired of this series, and I’m still an episode behind, and I’m not feeling very enthusiastic about it. (maximum)
Prime Video’s “Secret Level” dropped seven more episodes this week, but so far I’m picking a “mixed bag” in terms of quality. This series suffers from a lack of story. Shorts are short anyway. Some are great, like Warhammer 40k, but many are just okay. (Prime Video)
Dexter: Original Sin is out now and fans seem to be generally positive about the show, so we really need to get going. It’s certainly more positive than New Blood, which divided fans and left many fans pretty disappointed. (Paramount)
Star Wars: Skeleton Crew continues to grow on me. I really enjoyed episode 4 and I really think Jude Law is the best thing to happen to Star Wars since Andor came out. I would like to see a movie about Crimson Jack’s adventures as a space pirate. (Disney Plus)
The second season of “The Shrink” just ended. I’m still a few episodes behind, but I just want to fire this up and binge-watch the rest. Now that it’s over I’m thinking of doing it. What a great show. (Apple TV)
There are others. While Yellowstone is wrapping up, Taylor Sheridan’s The Landman is airing new episodes on Sundays on Paramount+. I’m getting a little bored with the second season of Silo on Apple, and I’ll probably have to sit down and binge-watch a few episodes to catch up on this one as well. I also need to catch up on some episodes of Outlander. It’s a show that I binge enjoy as well, so I sometimes watch it for a few weeks and then knock out three or four episodes at a time.
