The Academy of Television Arts and Sciences announced Thursday that the live-action film adaptation of Eiichiro Oda’s manga “One Piece” has been nominated for 11 2024 Children’s and Family Emmy Awards. Separately, the Visual Effects Association will award the Creative Excellence Award and Visionary Award to Takashi Yamazaki (Godzilla Minus One) and Hiroyuki Sanada (Shogun) at the 23rd VES Awards to be held on February 11th. “Godzilla Minus One” animator Kosuke Taguchi and director Takashi Yamazaki were nominated. Received the Outstanding Animation Character Award at the 22nd VES Awards.
The live-action One Piece series was released exclusively on Netflix in August 2023. The first season had eight episodes, compared to 10 as originally reported. It has been decided that a live-action season 2 will be produced, and series creator Oda said that the story up to the Drum Island arc will be depicted in season 2. This includes Loguetown, Reverse Mountain, Twin Capes, Whiskey Peak, Little Garden, and Drum Island.
The second season adds Joe Tratz (Percy Jackson and the Olympians) as writer, executive producer, and co-showrunner. He joins Season 1 writer, executive producer and co-showrunner Matt Owens. Season 1 co-showrunner Steve Maeda will serve as executive producer. Seasonal production has begun.
Deadline reports that the expected release date is 2025.
Tomorrow Studios, a partnership between producer Marty Adelstein (Prison Break, Teen Wolf) and ITV Studios, produced the first live-action season. Becky Clements served as executive producer along with Maeda.
