The wait is over – the nominations for the 97th Academy Awards have been announced.
As expected, “Emilia Perez” led the field with 13 nominations on Thursday morning. This included Best Picture, Lead Actress (Carla Sofia Gascón), Supporting Actress (Zoe Saldaña), and Direct (Jack Audide). Gascón, who stars as the eponymous cartel boss who underwent gender-affirming surgery, made history as the first trans woman nominated in the acting category.
The French-produced Netflix-Distributed Crime Musical holds the record for most nominations earned by an international film, previously held by “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” (2000) and “Roma” (2018) with 10 nominations each. I broke it. Brazil’s “I’m Still Here” was also nominated in both the international feature and photography categories.
‘Anora’, ‘Brutal’, ‘Complete Unknown’, ‘Conclave’, ‘Dune: Part 2’, ‘Nickel Boys’, ‘Substance’, ‘Evil’, ‘Evil’ make Best Picture nominees I’ll conclude.
“Wicked” actor Bowen Yang and “Bottoms” star Rachel Sennott to reveal nominees in all 23 categories during a presentation streamed live from the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills. It was stolen from me.
The 2025 Oscar nominations were originally scheduled to be announced on January 17, but were postponed amid the multiple wildfires that have devastated Los Angeles. Despite delays that have extended the nomination voting period, the 97th Oscar ceremony will be held on March 2 at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood, with live telecast on ABC and Hulu. At the start of Thursday’s announcement, Motion Picture Academy President Janet Yang and CEO Bill Kramer expressed sympathy for those affected by the fires and said this year’s awards were “in recognition of the talented films nominated today. Celebrating our creators, honoring our brave first responders, and paying tribute to the enduring spirit of Los Angeles and the film industry.”
