YouTube is undoubtedly one of the best video streaming platforms, but sometimes it can be difficult to find the right videos. To put an end to the never-ending scrolling problem, YouTube is reportedly testing a new “Play something” floating action button.
According to a recent report by 9to5Google, the new “Play something” button will appear just above the bottom bar with a black background and white text. Additionally, while it says that tapping the button will start a random video in the Shorts player, the button actually also allows you to play regular content in portrait mode, with ” Like, Dislike, Comment, and Share buttons. It will appear at the top of the screen with a timeline scrubber at the bottom of the player.

However, once the miniplayer is activated, the (play something) button disappears. This isn’t the first time YouTube has experimented with the ability to play something. In 2023, a Reddit user found a banner with the text “Can’t decide what to watch?” You’ll see a “Play Something” button at the bottom.
It’s still unclear if and when the new “Play Something” button will be rolled out to all users, but it appears Google is still trying to decide whether to go ahead with it.
Earlier this year, in October, YouTube announced that it would be rolling out a number of new improvements and features, including setting playlist thumbnails, setting a sleep timer, and a redesigned mini-player.
