Washington DC:
Donald Trump’s plan to buy Greenland has taken a serious turn. Republicans have begun gathering support in the House of Representatives for a new bill that would give the US president the power to enter into formal negotiations to buy Greenland.
A bill entitled the “Make Greenland Great Again Act” is being circulated to gather co-sponsors. As of Monday, the bill already had 10 sponsors. It is led by Republican Representatives Andy Ogles and Diana Hershberger.
This makes it officially clear that Donald Trump, who will be sworn in as US president next week, is serious about purchasing Greenland and making it part of the US. He has said this many times in recent weeks, and even asked his advisers in 2019 during his first term as president how he could do that.
During his term, President-elect Trump even made it clear that if either Denmark or Greenland rejected the takeover option, the United States would not hesitate to use military or economic means to persuade them.

Greenland is a colony of Denmark. It is a semi-sovereign state, dependent on the Kingdom of Denmark for all diplomatic and security matters. Denmark has ruled Greenland for centuries, despite calls for independence for the largest island for decades.
Greenland is part of the Danish constitution, and Copenhagen would need to amend the constitution to give Greenland full sovereignty and freedom. As President Donald Trump threatens to buy Greenland, Danish Prime Minister Mut Egede has called for full independence for the island. He also said that Greenland is not for sale and that the final decision about its future must be made by Greenlanders.
