Back in December, Gemini 2.0 Flash Thinking was announced as Google’s first inference model, with an updated experimental version available for testing.

Built on Flash 2.0, announced earlier that month, the model delivers improved inference performance, the ability to solve more complex problems, and (like AI Studio) ”I will. This combines gemini-2.0-flash-exp and gemini-exp-1206.

Google today released Gemini 2.0 Flash Thinking Experimental 01-21 (the hyphen between the month and day is new to Google’s model naming scheme), which includes:

1 Million Token Context Window (from 32k): This is useful when you want to “plug in your codebase or query a set of papers using more complex inference.” Support for native code execution: for improved tool usage Longer output token generation Infrequent model discrepancies (“reduced chance of thought-answer discrepancies”)

We also enabled code execution as a tool, so the model can decide to write and execute code during the response. You can enable it in the sidebar of AI Studio.

Compared to Exp 1219, it shows “superior performance on math, science, and multimodal reasoning benchmarks,” including 73.3% on the AIME2024 (math) benchmark and 74.2% on the GPQA Diamond (science) benchmark.

DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis said this “represents very fast progress since our initial release last December.” More broadly:

We’ve been pioneering this type of planning system for over a decade, starting with programs like AlphaGo. It will be very interesting to see the powerful combination of these ideas with the most capable underlying models.

Gemini 2.0 Flash Thinking Experimental is free to test via Google AI Studio and API. Looking ahead, Sundar Pichai said, “The advances in thinking around scaling have been amazing and will continue to be repeated,” adding, “There will be a lot more to come.”

Meanwhile, Google updated the mobile UI for AI Studio earlier this month.
