The United Nations Security Council on Friday expressed concern about the situation in Afghanistan.
“Members of the Security Council note that Taliban policies and practices that limit the enjoyment of human rights and fundamental freedoms of women and girls continue to have a negative impact on peace, stability, development and the people of Afghanistan. I am deeply concerned.” In a statement.
Member States met on 12 December for a Security Council meeting on Afghanistan and reaffirmed their strong commitment to Afghanistan’s sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity and national unity.
Members stressed the need to ensure the “full, equal, meaningful and safe” participation of women and girls for Afghanistan’s future and long-term development, and called on the Taliban to “improve these policies and practices.” He asked them to withdraw it immediately.
Member states also expressed “deep concern” over the dire economic and humanitarian situation in Afghanistan, according to the statement.
The members reaffirmed that terrorism is “one of the most serious threats” to peace and security in Afghanistan and called on the Taliban to take “aggressive steps” to strengthen the fight against terrorism.
The Leaders underlined the United Nations’ continued important role in promoting peace and stability in Afghanistan and expressed their appreciation for the United Nations’ long-term commitment to supporting the Afghan people.
According to the statement, the two leaders emphasized the importance of developing a political roadmap in consultation with all stakeholders to achieve a peaceful Afghanistan for the country and its neighbors.
The Taliban returned to rule Afghanistan in August 2021 after more than two decades of war.
The transitional regime continues to impose numerous rules and policies that violate a wide range of fundamental rights for women and girls.
Afghanistan also faces risks of hunger, malnutrition and poverty, a near-collapse of the national public health system, and natural disasters.
