Umar Nurmagomedov fell short on the judges’ scorecards in his fight against Merab Dvalishvili at UFC 311 on Sunday. The UFC bantamweight title fight ended in a close fight, with Merab declared “still the undisputed champion” after five intense rounds. Like his brother Khabib Nurmagomedov, Umar was undefeated before the fight. However, after winning 18 straight fights, junior Nurmagomedov suffered a loss. After the match, there were many different opinions on the internet about the result, and as the dust settled, Umar shared his thoughts on the defeat.

Merab Dvalishvili vs. Umar Nurmagomedov was a highly touted fight that was unanimously the fight of the night. Veteran commentator Joe Rogan, who witnessed the fight up close, hailed it as one of the best in the bantamweight division.

In the lead-up to UFC 311, Umar Nurmagomedov appeared to be a tough fight for Merab, entering the Octagon as the favorite. In the anticlimax, Merab’s cardio and takedown ability proved too much for Nurmagomedov to overcome. With that, Dvalishvili cemented his reign and left the Octagon with pride.

The day after the fight, Umar Nurmagomedov released his first statement after suffering the first loss of his career. In a short note, the Russian player said that in his opinion he did not lose the match, but that he would not make any excuses for the final result. He further emphasized that he will bounce back from this and continue working towards winning a prestigious UFC strap.

“There are no excuses,” Nurmagomedov wrote. “Insha’Allah, I will be the champion. The rest doesn’t matter. Praise Allah in any situation.

“And even if the whole world tries to convince me otherwise, I don’t think I’ve lost this fight. Let’s overcome the injury and get back on track.”
