The analogy is not new, but commentators have long mentioned Ukraine’s full-scale invasion as President of Russia’s Ukrainian president as Afghanistan, given some of the similarities between the two wars.
Starting in 2001 shortly after the attack on September 11th and ending with the sudden withdrawal of US forces in 2021, the war in Afghanistan remains the longest American war in history.
“There’s no way out of the infinite war, no limitless conflict, no way out of the conflict, no way to eat energy, human life, money, everything,” Oban continued his comparison. “It destroys the European Union’s normal framework of life. …We are in serious danger.”
Orban, one of the few European leaders who remain friendly with Putin, reiterated the story of the Kremlin that invaded Ukraine to stop Russia from joining NATO.
On Friday, he defended himself from accusations of being ally with Putin. “I’m not a Proputin guy. I’m a pro-Hungarian guy,” he said.
“The difficulty is… a way to persuade the Russians to stop the war while the Russians are basically victorious,” Ovan added. “This is a big problem.”
