Interview with David Waxman, director of “2 children a day”
The subject is emotionally charged and complicated. How did you approach the visuals and story style of the movie to balance storytelling and Advocacy?
This movie is emotionally charged for several reasons, and the main thing is that it is about children. The idea was to make a movie based on the raw materials in the interrogation room. Despite the fact that it is at the center of the movie, it is important for me to introduce the Israel side, despite the fact that four Palestinian children are standing from the Aidan refugee camp on the west coast of the Jordan River. did. Citizens of the country. That’s why it was important for me to interview those officials, soldiers, security guards and military lawyers.
I interviewed a neutral background to give a considerable weight to Palestinian children and people in Israeli systems. At the same time, viewers should be observed without looking away from the interrogation room. These scenes can only be seen in the second or third viewing. What Israeli speakers say is that what is happening in the interrogation room is connected to the daily reality of the west coast of the Jordan River.
How did you access the relevant family, children, and institutions? How did you guarantee the true nature of the story spoken in the movie?
It was a very long trip including searching for children on the west coast of the Jordan River. Palestine’s co -produced producer Hummadobai searched for children in the video from the interrogation room for months. It took a long time for Muhammad to gain the trust of the children and his family, and then I took a picture and slowly built trust between us.
It is important that most of the refugee camps on the west coast of the Jordan and the Palestinian children in the village are only “meet” only soldiers who only get in the house and arrest them violently, and just shoot at demonstrations and army checkpoints. Alternatively, the settlers who are exposed to the protection of the Army for the purpose of harm the army and expel from land. Unfortunately, they are Israelites who meet most of the majority of Israeli society. That’s why when Israel’s coach comes and wants to make a movie about their story, I understand the difficulty of creating trust. It’s not easy, takes time, and of course.
Regarding Israeli interviews, “I was shooting and crying” carefully chose the decision that people behind the actions do not want to be the subject of interviews today. 。 There were quite a few interviews we had filmed for many years, but they did not eventually appear in the movie.
For many years, we have met tens of children, even if they are not hundreds of children on the west coast of the Jordan River in film research. We knew we couldn’t include the story of everyone, but some of the reasons for satisfying them were to verify the story with mutual reference. I heard the same story many times. From various children in various areas on the west coast of the Jordan River, arrested, interrogated, and spent a long time in prison. Children who talked about violence and humiliation during arrest, detention, and interrogation. The most basic violation of children under the International Treaty.
And of course, everyone repeated the fact that some of the methods are to make their friends a crime so that you can see them in the movie interrogation room.
The film is working on a major systematic problem with Palestinian children. While making this movie, did you encounter the same problem, resistance and barriers from authorities and institutions?
When the movie was released, the Minister of Cultural Miki Zohal began a harsh attack on the movie to stop its distribution. The Minister demanded that we returned the state funds we received for the movie. His attack was a serious attempt to remain silent from the eyes of the Israelites and the world, trying to hide Israel’s terrifying acts against the Palestinians on the west coast of the Jordan. His actions have pushed movies to more and more viewers in Japan and the world, as he wanted to understand that the Minister of Culture in Israel had been trying to hide from them.
What kind of reactions and actions do you want to see from the audience watching a movie?
I have to honestly say that this movie was first created for Israeli viewers. I hope they can see Palestinian children, and understand that these acts are being committed every day under our name.
The main ambition to create a movie is to put the issue of arrests of Palestinian children on the public agenda. Few people know this problem around Israel and around the world. Unfortunately, there are only a few Israelians who have been suppressed for decades after October 7, listening to the fact that there are decades and has been accepted. And as a society, we are responsible for Geno side, one hour car from our house.
Today, the important part of creating changes and raising awareness is through international audience watching movies. The audience tells Palestinian people about the continuous oppression of Genocide, and demonstrates his clear position and expresses the action of Israel.
As a film creator, how has this project changed from you?
Unfortunately, this movie has strengthened my understanding that there is almost no view I have in Israeli society today, as a film creator and as a person. My pain on Palestinian children and civilians on the west coast of Gaza and the Jordan River is growing. As a citizen of Israel, I feel great responsibility. Genocide, which is committed by our name, remains in our hands and conscience forever. And there is nothing to erase this evil and cruel dye from the history of mankind. What I can do with this oppression is to express a clear position with the help of the movie I made, hoping that it will reach as many people as possible.
Do you have anything you want to add?
Gaza and Palestine will soon fall off the headlines around the world, so I hope the film will continue to resonate with the audience. We sincerely hope that this movie will encourage people to learn more and oppose Palestinians for decades.
