Pakistan has suffered a major setback in its hopes of becoming a member of the BRICS (which also includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa and now Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia and the United Arab Emirates).
Pakistan has been unable to secure membership in BRICS due to strong opposition from India. Moreover, it could not be added to the list of partner countries. Meanwhile, Turkey is included in the list of BRICS partner countries.
Russia recently announced 13 new partner countries, including Algeria, Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, Nigeria, Uzbekistan and Vietnam. These countries will become BRICS partners from January 1, 2025, but Pakistan, which was seeking to join BRICS with support from China and Russia, is not included in this list.
Due to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s change in position on the Kashmir issue, many believe that India did not oppose Turkey’s candidacy.
Pakistan’s failure has been severely criticized domestically. Diplomatic expert Mariana Babar reportedly said this was a “total failure” of Pakistan’s foreign ministry. She reportedly said that even countries like Nigeria are performing better than Pakistan and are BRICS partner countries.
