President Donald Trump was able to announce his mutual tariff plans before meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday, the White House said on Wednesday.
“I believe he’ll come before the Prime Minister’s visit tomorrow,” he told White House reporters when asked about Trump’s upcoming announcement.

Trump said on Sunday he plans to slap mutual tariffs on “all countries” that impose import obligations on the US

Reuters said House Speaker Mike Johnson on Wednesday that he believes Trump is considering exemptions from mutual tariffs in the drug and automotive industries.

The obviously pressing move will underscore the extent to which Trump has become a core component of his economic agenda.
During his first month of office, Trump imposed extensive import duties on China, Canada and Mexico. He suspended tariffs on two US neighbours for 30 days after suffering an agreement on illegal crossings and drug trafficking police at their respective borders.
On Monday, Trump signed an order that imposes a 25% tariff on steel and aluminum imports.
Reuters, citing government officials, said India in multiple sectors ahead of the talks with Trump as India is trying to avoid a possible trade war with the US. It reported Monday that it is preparing to cut tariffs.
Modi will meet with several Trump administration officials during his trip to Washington, DC, including Elon Musk, who leads Trump’s so-called government efficiency agency.
The discussion between Modi and Musk is expected to focus in part on Musk’s private business ventures, including the expansion of Starlink and Tesla in India.
