Elon Musk’s government efficiency, or Doge representatives, were granted access to the energy sector’s IT systems on Wednesday. Energy secretary Chris Wright, two people with knowledge of the situation told CNN.

Wright granted access to Doge president Luke Farritor, a 23-year-old former SpaceX intern. DOE Chief Information Office is the department’s IT and Cybersecurity office.

Members of the General Counsel and Chief Information Office said, “This is a bad idea,” and Farittle didn’t have the standard background research needed to access the department’s system, one of the people said CNN He spoke to. “He’s not making it clear that he’s in the DOE in our system. None of those things are being done.”

Farritor has been granted access to Basic IT, including email and Microsoft 365. The Chief Information Office is doing only that and a small amount of cybersecurity for the National Nuclear Security Agency, they said. It does not run IT systems in the laboratory of nuclear agencies that manage the country’s nuclear stockpile.

On Friday, department leadership set up another SpaceX engineer, Ryan Riedel, whom three people familiar with the issue spoke to CNN.

According to his LinkedIn profile, Riedel spent four years as a network security engineer at SpaceX. Before that, he spent several years in various technical roles in the Army and Navy, according to his profile.

A spokesman for the Energy division did not reply to requests for comment. CNN also reached out to SpaceX for comment.

In addition to the presence of DOGE within the building, employees in the energy sector, including the National Nuclear Security Agency, have received so-called buy-out emails received by employees from many other agencies. “Shopping” is generally allowed for employees to quit their job, but is paid until the end of September. The NNSA’s inclusion in the “buying” wave is important as it manufactures and maintains the country’s nuclear stockpile and engages in other important national security activities.

An energy department employee warned that within a year employees working in the department would receive an email deemed to have probation status and could be fired immediately. These types of emails have also been sent to more than 1,000 Environmental Protection Agency employees.

There are at least 1,000 DOE staff working in a relatively new office in the department created after Biden’s infrastructure and climate law passed several years ago.

CNN reported that their work on issues deemed involved in diversity, equity and inclusion led to 60 energy department employees taking administrative leave earlier this week.
