'They don't have any money': Elon Musk reacts to ChatGPT maker's announcement of $500 billion infrastructure project

ChatGPT maker OpenAI, led by Sam Altman, announced Stargate, a $500 billion project aimed at building new AI infrastructure in the United States over the next four years. The effort is backed by SoftBank, Oracle, and MGX, and will immediately commit $100 billion. OpenAI claims Stargate will strengthen U.S. AI leadership, create jobs and economic benefits, and strengthen national security.
SoftBank and OpenAI are leading the project, with SoftBank in charge of finance and OpenAI overseeing operations under Chairman Masayoshi Son. Key technology partners include Arm, Microsoft, NVIDIA, Oracle, and OpenAI itself.

OpenAI announced the project in a lengthy post on X (formerly Twitter). In response to the announcement post, Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and SpaceX and owner of xAI, expressed skepticism about funding for the project, stating that the necessary funds are not available. suggested. “They don’t actually have any money,” Musk wrote. In another post, the Tesla CEO wrote, “Softbank has secured well under $10 billion. I have it on good authority.”

He also suggested that OpenAI and Microsoft’s partnership may be in trouble, echoing a sentiment shared by X users. “OpenAI and Microsoft are finished,” the user wrote. To this, Elon Musk replied, “It seems so.”

OpenAI said construction has begun in Texas and plans to evaluate additional locations across the country once agreements are finalized. The company also highlighted existing partnerships with Oracle and NVIDIA in computing systems.
The announcement was made during a White House press conference where the then-president discussed infrastructure investment in the United States.
