Runway shows are undoubtedly one of the most exciting parts of the fashion industry, but most of us have to content ourselves with just witnessing a digital rendering of what should be an IRL experience through our phone screens . But the fashion exhibition is there. Perhaps the most democratic of all fashion events, fashion exhibitions invite us into an exclusive world and allow us to immerse ourselves in everything the industry has to offer. From the visual history of culture-producing magazines to the lives and times of cult figures to the smuggler’s collection of poolside budgies, this season’s fashion exhibitions have something for everyone, so we Scroll through to see our picks for the best.
Bible of youth culture face The National Portrait Gallery will host its own exhibition in February this year, featuring more than 200 works from the magazine’s history. Launching NPG’s 2025 Program; The Face Magazine: Cultural Change There will be photos of Kate Moss, Kylie Minogue, Sade and Madonna, as well as many other stars and fashion editorials from the pages of the magazine. Bringing together the work of more than 80 photographers, the exhibition includes industry giants such as Glenn Luchford, David LaChapelle, Colin Day, Juergen Teller, Ellen von Unwerth, and Jean-Paul Goude. Telling the life and times of a legendary artist in London Lee Bowery This year I’m planning on getting the Tate Modern treatment. Exploring Bowery’s accomplishments as a fashion designer, performer, clad kid, model and television personality, the show explores Bowery’s explosive creative output, created in collaboration with his wife and sidekick Nicola Rainbird and corsetier Mr. Pearl. The costume will be unveiled for the first time. Through Fergus Greer’s fashion photographs, we shed light on the different ways he brought them to life.

Superfine: black style tailoring This work explores the history of black dandies, examining how they used their extreme obsession with style to transform their identities and political possibilities from the 18th century to the present day. Inspired by Monica L. Miller’s wonderful 2009 book Slaves of Fashion: Styling Black Dandyism and Black Diaspora Identitythe New York exhibit draws on clothing, prints, photography, film and more, and is guest-curated by Miller alongside longtime Metropolitan Museum of Art curator Andrew Bolton.

Across the pond and back in Paris, the Musée des Arts Décoratifs is celebrating the 35th anniversary of the Prix Andame, the prestigious fashion award for emerging designers created in 1989. For many years, award winners have been invited to contribute their award works. -The winning collection is sent to the museum every year, which forms the current exhibition. Featuring a long list of famous and upcoming designers, fashion, new generation include martin margiela, Gareth Pugh, jeremy scott, marine sail, Ludovic de Saint Sernin, Esther Manas, Louis Gabriel Nouchi, Duran Lantinck, Glenn Martens, and Arthur Avellano.

Described as an examination of “our enduring love of water over the past 100 years,” the exhibit features one of the bikini designer’s earliest surviving examples, a barely-there 80s The men’s Speedo craze promises to explore all kinds of underwater fashion. Louis Réard’s work, and even the 2020s “mermaid core” micro-trend.

In our 231 year history, louver In other words, we have never held a fashion exhibition before. appropriate title louvre couture will feature a total of 65 ensembles and 30 accessories, exploring the relationship between the fashion world and the Louvre collection. But rather than have their own dedicated exhibition, the works are scattered throughout the Louvre’s 9,700-square-foot decorative arts department to “highlight existing similarities” with items in the collection. The Louvre remains tight-lipped about the exhibit, but previews suggest that the closing ceremony gown will be jean paul gaultier‘s AW08 haute couture show will be featured as one of the archive pieces.

While other museums have taken a more direct approach, exhibiting exhibits about a single person, such as a magazine or cultural group, the Kyoto Costume Research Foundation takes a slightly more conceptual approach. Love fashion: Searching for yourself This work centers around the concept of love and how that emotion inspires what we wear. “The clothes we wear embody or hide our inner desires, revealing them along with our longings, passions, and the conflicts and contradictions we face. ” states the museum. “Fashion has a role as a receptacle for love… Driven by those emotions, we wear what we like, are inspired by someone else’s look, want to be ourselves, or just be who we are. You might want to lose it.” Featuring items from KCI’s costume collection, the following designers are participating in the show: Jonathan Anderson for loewe, miuccia prada, alexander mcqueen, Demna, Rei Kawakubo, tom ford, John Galliano, helmut lang And so on. The exhibition will start at KCI in late 2024 and move to two other locations in Japan this year.
Love fashion: Searching for yourself will be held at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Kumamoto until March 2, 2025, and at the Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery from April 16, 2025 to June 22, 2025.
heading towards antwerpMoMu explores the relationship between fashion and interiors through the lens of gender in an exhibition titled “Fashion and Interiors.” An affair between a man and a woman. TThe museum explains that in the domestic ideology of the 19th century, “the woman of the household decorated her interior with soft cushions and fabrics, curtains, handiwork, and all kinds of accessories,” adding, “So did her body. ” states. Added weight with layers of fabric and passementry, so that she became assimilated with her interior to the point of complete disappearance. ” In addition to the exhibition’s interiors, works by contemporary designers such as Martin Margiela, Anne Demeulemeester, Raf Simons and Hussein Chalayan will also be on display.
