Thane: Thane Municipal Corporation hopes to establish a major water treatment plant in the city with the support of the International Finance Corporation (IFC).
Companies have a first-level discussion with IFC experts to discuss the feasibility of the project and several other green initiatives featured in the city. It can be noted that after the approval of the central government, local self-govt institutions in the state will be provided with financial support. A contract has been entered into between the IFC and the state, with the former providing financial assistance to select state municipalities, including Thane, an official statement issued by the company said.
“The city produces a huge amount of wastewater that can be handled and sold in open markets. Therefore, we are working on recycling this waste and the action plan is being prepared in collaboration with experts. As part of this, we are considering installing a purification plant with the capacity of 100 million liters to convert wastewater into pure water on a daily pilot basis. The project will be around 500 rupees. It is expected to cost money,” he told Rao.
Authorities attending the meeting said preliminary discussions were held with the IFC to obtain financial support through the central government or international financial institutions. “A study is underway to determine how this fund is raised and its repayment mode. A discussion of potential buyers regarding the sale price of this treated water and product will also be analysed for its feasibility. It was being discussed for the meeting,” the official gift for the conference said.
Additionally, Rao also suggested that it could secure financial support for other environmentally friendly initiatives, such as improvements to water supply schemes, sewage treatment channels, solid waste treatment centres and lake conservation.
