Created by Lorne Michaels in 1975, Saturday Night Live transformed into the main stage of American sketch comedy, launching biting political comments, parody of pop culture events, and leading comedy performers in the country. The show has had a share of memorable fashion moments over the years.
The show featured skits that captivated the world of fashion, like Molly Shannon’s Veronica & Company. On Sunday, NBC celebrates 50 years of “SNL.” We celebrate the star-studded lineup featured in “SNL50: The Anniversary Special.” Ahead of the special premiere, WWD looks back on some of the show’s most memorable fashion moments.
Candice Bergen’s Las Vegas-style exterior, 1990

Candice Bergen was the first female host of the show in 1975 and the first woman to join the 5 Timers club in 1990. Due to the opening monologue number in 1990, she dripped the panels into the crystal in a shining black dress.
Nicole Kidman’s “Dangerous Business” appearance, 1993

When hosting “SNL” in 1993, Nicole Kidman paid tribute to her then-husband Tom Cruise, recreating the 1983 dance scene in “Dangerous Business.” Like him, she wore only a button-down shirt and white socks.
Maya Rudolph as Donatella Versace, 2000s

While competing on the show, Mayardolph played designer and fashion icon Donatella Versace in multiple sketches, including the 2007 “Versace Super Bowl Party.”
At another moment from the show, Rudolf’s Versace invented the “Versace Pocket,” a microwave snack in a $75,000 diamond tote.
“I always laugh at myself first and Maya certainly makes it easy,” Versace told WWD in 2022.

In a recurring skit that debuted in 2001, Will Ferrell portrayed the supervisor of Jeffrey Store, often playing against this week’s host. The store chain, created by Jeffrey Kalinsky, was permanently closed in 2020.

During the opening monologue in 2019, Jennifer Lopez tore apart the tuxedo and revealed an updated version of the iconic 2000 2000 Grammys Versace dress. In 2015, former Google CEO and executive chairman Eric Schmidt praised the highly searched dress online after the awards ceremony as the inspiration behind the creation of Google Image Search.

“Fast Fashion Advertising” with Jake Gyllenhaal, 2024

In 2024, “SNL” created a parody of a fast fashion commercial. The skit shows the campaign for parody brand Xiemu. As commerce progresses, narrators are increasingly saying things like, “not made of forced labor,” “no prisoners,” “even all workers paid by all workers, who have been of the wrong religion.” They try to reassure viewers with strange and uneasy claims.
