Australia was well managed against Sri Lanka in their second Test after reducing the hosts to 229-9 on stumps on day one on Thursday.

The half century of Dinesh Chandimal and Kusal Mendis kept Sri Lanka in the game, but the great hopes for the total total after winning the toss did not come true.

Australia got caught up in discipline, stuck to its plans and backed it up with great fielding despite the extreme heat and humidity.

Sri Lanka lost opener Pasm Nissanka early, but the 70-run stands on the second wicket between Dimus Karnaratne and Chandimar stabilized the innings.

Sri Lanka vs Australia, day 2, highlights from the first test

Spinner Nathan Lyon broke through when Carnaratne defeated the bat and bowled from the inner edge.

Sri Lanka fell to 127-5 as the lower mid-order struggled with disciplined bowling.

Their approach was so careless that even Travis Head, a part-time spinner, found himself in his first wicket. Camindu Mendis was trying to cut the delivery near his body, but was caught in Steve Smith’s slip.

Chandimal rarely had problems during the 74 battles, including six boundaries and six boundaries. However, Matthew Koonemann painted the batter folded from the fold, making Alex Carrey’s quick glovework a second.

Australia seemed to close things off quickly as the important threat was rejected, but Kusal Mendis resisted an unbeaten 59.

The 65-run stand for the seventh wicket between Kusar and Ramesh Mendis extended the innings for Sri Lanka, and Australia ran out of ideas. At that point, Smith chose a second new ball and Mitchell Stark was soon caught in the back to end Ramesh’s stubborn resistance. He made 28.

Starc removed the Prabath Jayasuriya with the next ball and was edged towards the slip. Nieshan Palis survived the hat-trick ball, but was soon cleaned up by Kneman.

Stark finished with three wickets and like Lyon, he put Australia on the course for a 2-0 series victory.

Before playing, Karunaratne was given an honorary security guard by Australia when Australia went out to the bat. He became the seventh Sri Lanka featured in 100 Test matches. The former captain announced he would be resigning after the test.
