Russia’s presence in Africa – Stabilizing forces or templates for the expansion of influence over the continent?
A stabilizing force to enhance sovereignty in African countries, or a focus on increasing Russian influence across the continent?
This documentary is a exploration of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s strategic ambitions in Africa, seen through the prism of the Central African Republic (CAR). At the second Russian African Summit held in St. Petersburg in July 2023, President Putin announced military agreements with more than 40 African countries. The agreement has already begun to restructure geopolitical relations and has great significance for the local population. The Wagner Group, a paramilitary organization in Russia, has been involved in cars since 2018, and some people support its existence, but independent investigations have reported horrific human rights abuses with little or no accountability. The film includes insights from former Wagner Commander Marat Gavidlin, French political analyst Emmanuel Dupuy, and adviser to motorist president Fauston Archange Toudella. They shed light on the complex situation of cars, a combination of military involvement, resource exploitation and geopolitical manipulation, and the way that it is becoming a template for Russia’s growing influence in Africa.
