Beyond the Gaze is a documentary film about Jules Campbell, the founding editor of Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue.

Campbell, who died in late 2022 at the age of 97, revolutionized American publishing and produced one of the most profitable magazine issues in history.

In addition to her work as a photographer, she has discovered and nurtured the careers of some of the world’s most famous supermodels, including On the Red Carpet fashion expert Roshumba Williams.

Williams recalls how Campbell’s groundbreaking work paved the way for women in fashion.

“She laid the foundation for a collective of beautiful women who represent inclusivity, diversity, breaking glass ceilings, beauty, strength and the entire world,” she said.

The documentary is currently touring film festivals, having screened at the Woodstock Film Festival and the Newport Beach Film Festival, in hopes of securing a distributor.

Directed by Jules’ daughter-in-law, Jill Campbell, the film details Jules’ deep influence on both the fashion industry and the women she mentored.

“I want the younger generation of women to see the battles she fought and how she overcame them,” she said. “I hope people are inspired by the many women she worked with, collaborated with, and started their careers. I just want this to be an inspiring story about women. I think so.”
