Today is the season of harvest festivals. As Pongal begins today, let’s take a look at the traditional attire – half saree. Evolved into a stylish statement by the likes of Janhvi Kapoor, Sobhita Dhulipala and Aditi Rao Hydari, this attire also retains its cultural essence and significance.

Origin
Half sarees are known as ‘Ranga Voni’ in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana and ‘Pattu Pavadai Davani’ in Tamil Nadu. Designer Nachiket Barbu explains: “The half-sari has its origins in many states of South India and is considered a rite of passage garment for girls as they become women. It also has cultural significance. It is also weather-appropriate and has now become a style statement. ”
In fact, the half-sari has evolved beyond its ceremonial roots. Today, it graces red carpets, modern bridal trousseaus, and festive wardrobes. Most importantly, this drape is prized for its versatility and ability to make a striking statement.
Dialogue between past and present
Traditional half sarees are made from luxurious silk and are often adorned with intricate zari work that reflects the splendor of South Indian art. These are perfect for the festival of Pongal, where bright colors and luxurious textures blend in with the joy of the season.
However, modern interpretations lean towards lighter, more fluid fabrics. “I love fine fabrics like chiffon and georgette because they add volume. Fine, flowy fabrics work beautifully,” says stylist Isha Bhansali.
This juxtaposition of traditional construction and modern materials adds an interesting complexity to this timeless piece. “Designers are rethinking this traditional ensemble, favoring lightweight materials like tissue silk for timeless elegance and fluid movement,” says Barb, adding, “Color The palette has become bolder, with ombre hues and unexpected contrasts replacing traditional tones.”
Effortlessly balancing intricate embroidery and traditional motifs with bright colors and lightweight, the half sari is a fashion-forward outfit for festivals. “A half-sari is a versatile outfit perfect for festive occasions like Pongal…Whether it’s a family gathering or a cultural event, this outfit strikes a balance between tradition and style.” Barb shares.
Styling for the ’90s
The best way to style this outfit is to keep it traditional. Barb says, “It’s good to pay homage to the roots of your clothing, so pair it with temple jewellery, and maybe diamonds. And add a gajra.”
