The AAP and Congress had challenged last year’s Lok Sabha election in last year’s alliance, but were unable to stop the BJP from wiping out all seven parliament seats in the domestic capital. Local competition prevented the former allies from reaching a capital contest agreement.
A solo contest between the AAP and Congress split the opposition votes, with at least 11 votes, with congressional candidates winning more votes than the BJP’s victory margin. This means that if the two parties were tied up, the outcome could have been against the BJP. However, Congress has said it is not a responsibility to secure AAP’s victory in the capital.
For Congress, Delhi’s fiasco comes shortly after losing parliamentary votes in Haryana and Maharashtra despite scoring in the election of Lok Sabah last year, which is why it is a source of concern.
