New Delhi (India), December 30 (ANI): Amid delays in the supply of engines for the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Mark 1A, the high price of the GE-414 engine contract with a US company has come to light. are. Officials say the price is likely to rise.
Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and GE have been in discussions for a project for a 98 kilonewton thrust GE-414 engine for the LCA Mark-2 aircraft.
The GE-404 engines used in the LCA Mark 1A aircraft are already delayed by more than 18 months and supplies are unlikely to begin until March 2025.
Sources told ANI that the contract price for the GE-414 engine is likely to increase in view of the ongoing talks between the two countries.
They said the GE-414 engine project is of great importance as it is needed for India’s indigenous fighter program to develop fourth-generation aircraft.
The GE-404 engine has been delayed due to supply chain issues facing American original equipment manufacturers, officials said.
All important indigenous fighter jet projects have suffered delays due to engine issues, impacting the Indian Air Force’s operational readiness.
The Ministry of Defense has currently set up a committee under the Secretary of Defense to make recommendations regarding the development of capabilities of the Indian Air Force.
Three key fighter development projects include the LCA Mark 1A, LCA Mark 2, and the 5th Generation Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA).
The IAF has already ordered 83 LCA Mark 1A fighter jets, with 97 more in service.
