Hours after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau resigned, incoming US President Donald Trump on Monday (January 6, 2024) reiterated his proposal to make Canada the 51st US state.

Trudeau, 53, announced his resignation on Monday after the ruling Liberal Party forced him to do so amid growing unpopularity. A general election is scheduled for this year. Canada’s prime minister said he would remain in office until his party elects a new leader.

Mr. Trump, 78, did not have a good relationship with Mr. Trudeau during his first term from 2017 to 2021, but since meeting Mr. Trudeau after taking office, he has expressed interest in the idea of making Canada the 51st U.S. state. continues to have. Election victory at Mar-a-Lago on November 5th. He has since mentioned this several times in social media posts.

“Many people in Canada love being our 51st province. The United States can no longer suffer from the huge trade deficits and subsidies that Canada needs to survive,” Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said. I knew this and resigned,” Trump said on Truth Social.

“If Canada merged with the United States, there would be no tariffs, much lower taxes, and we would be completely safe from the constant threat of Russian and Chinese shipping all around us. What a great country we would be together. Yes!!!,” the president-elect said after Mr. Trudeau resigned on Monday.

There has been little reaction from the Canadian side to Trump’s proposal.

Trump has threatened to impose a 25% tariff on Canadian imports if Toronto fails to stem the flow of illegal drugs and illegal immigrants from the southern border with the United States.

In one post, Mr. Trump mocked Mr. Trudeau as a “Canadian governor.”
