Pete Alonso’s future with the Mets depends on a short-term contract worth $90 million, according to MLB officials.

It’s been a long offseason for four-time All-Star Pete Alonso. The hard-hitting first baseman has been the most prolific home run hitter in the majors since his debut in 2019. However, his free agent market may not have been what he thought. Despite his impressive performance throughout his career, Alonso remains a free agent.

It remains to be seen how much Alonso will sign and, perhaps more importantly, where he will sign. After being linked with a number of different clubs this offseason, several potential suitors have opted to go in different directions at first base. Christian Walker, Paul Goldschmidt and Carlos Santana are among the first basemen who have already signed new contracts. So what happens to Alonso?

A return to the New York Mets may be the best option for Alonso. That said, MLB Insider Ken Rosenthal noted that the first baseman’s age and preference for signing younger players are some obstacles in negotiations.

“The question seems to be years,” Rosenthal said on Thursday’s episode of Foul Territory. “David Stearns, the president of baseball operations, is someone we’ve seen who certainly doesn’t like to be involved long-term with pitchers or position players who are in their 30s, and he shares that same opinion.” It seems you have.”

The Mets have been active in making big contract offers to players in the past. However, they were all young and had not yet reached their prime. The club offered large contracts to two players, Juan Soto and Yoshinobu Yamamoto. With Alonso’s future as an everyday first baseman in doubt, Rosenthal believes a short-term deal may be the best option.

“The way I see this playing out, what makes the most sense to me is a near-term dollar strength,” Rosenthal added. “For example, $90 million over three years was floating around as a possibility. That’s a lot of money. That’s a lot of money and the highest AAV ever for a first baseman.”

New York Mets may consider internal options to replace Pete Alonso at first base

The New York Mets will have a better chance of winning the World Series in 2025 by bringing Pete Alonso back to the team. That being said, if the two sides can’t come to an agreement, the Mets could consider making internal changes to their infield.

There are rumors that the Mets may move third baseman Mark Vientos to first base to replace Alonso. The team could acquire another infielder to fill the hole at third base or look to the free agent market. Veterans like Alex Bregman and Yoan Moncada are still looking for their next contracts.
