ChatGPT maker OpenAI has completed a version of its new inference AI model, o3 mini, and plans to launch it in the coming weeks, CEO Sam Altman said on Friday.
The Microsoft-backed company has considered user feedback and, as a result, plans to release the application programming interface (API) and ChatGPT at the same time, Altman wrote in a post on social media platform X.
Last December, OpenAI announced it was testing its inference AI models o3 and o3 mini, collaborating with rivals such as Alphabet Inc.’s Google to develop smarter models that can tackle complex problems. This suggests that competition is intensifying.
The AI startup plans to launch o3 mini by the end of January, as its more robust large-scale language model could outperform existing models and attract new investment and users, followed by full rollout. I was planning to launch a new o3.
In September 2024, the GenAI pioneer released the o1 AI model, designed to spend more time processing queries to solve more difficult problems.
The o1 model can reason about complex tasks and solve more difficult problems than previous models in science, coding, and mathematics, the company said in a blog post.
The company has previously said that the new O3 and O3 mini models will be more powerful than the previously launched O1 model.
Earlier this week, OpenAI announced it was introducing a beta feature called Tasks to ChatGPT, signaling its move into the virtual assistant space, competing with Apple’s Siri and Amazon’s Alexa.
ChatGPT’s release in late 2022 sparked a frenzy of investment in AI companies, and its growing popularity and new product launches led OpenAI to close a $6.6 billion funding round in October.
