It’s nothing new that the Lamar Jackson-era Baltimore Ravens entered the playoffs looking like they were poised to win a Super Bowl.
Baltimore was probably the best team in the NFL at the end of the 2019 and 2023 seasons, but the Ravens fell short in the playoffs and didn’t make it to the Super Bowl. It’s hard to argue that they are the best team this season (although their DVOA is significantly higher than Baltimore). However, the Ravens are the hottest club in the NFL and could be among the favorites to win.
The difference was defense. The Ravens had the NFL’s worst pass defense early in the season, but things have changed dramatically. The strategic shift to use All-Pro Kyle Hamilton as a free safety instead of at the line coincided with a major change in direction. The Ravens won in Week 17 with a 31-2 shutout of the Houston Texans. It was a victory beyond words. Jackson had a historic season and the offense was great as Derrick Henry added the missing pieces. If the Ravens’ defense can also play at a championship level, Baltimore will be a dangerous team that is sure to win it all. The Ravens finally have to get it done when it matters most.
Here are the power rankings after Week 17 of the NFL season.
