New Delhi:
The construction of a brand new university, named after right-wing ideologue VD Savalkar, has sparked a storm of protest from the opposition Congress and its student wing NSUI. With Prime Minister Narendra Modi set to lay the foundation stone of Savarkar University tomorrow, NSUI has demanded that the university be named after former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, who passed away last month.
NSUI has written to Prime Minister Modi with three demands: A world-class university affiliated with the University of Delhi, named after Dr. Manmohan Singh. Chuo University is dedicated in his name. Incorporating his life journey from post-separatist student to global icon into the academic curriculum and political realm.
“Dr. , and celebrate his innovative vision,” their letter said.
The Congress points out that there are a large number of freedom fighters in the country and the government can choose from among them. Even Delhi University could be named after a freedom fighter, the party said, further strengthening its argument that Savarkar was not a freedom fighter.
“There were many freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives for the country’s sovereignty and freedom. If they had named the university after them, it would have been a tribute to them,” said Congressman Syed.・Dr. Nasir Hussain said.
“But since the BJP has no leader or symbol, they are promoting and legitimizing those who supported the British rule era,” he added.
PM Modi plans to lay the foundation stone of the Veer Savarkar University in Roshanpura, Najafgarh, which will have “state-of-the-art educational facilities besides an academic block in East Delhi and an academic block in Dwarka”. said in a statement. The Prime Minister’s Office announced today.
