WASHINGTON — Marianne Williamson, a two-time presidential candidate and self-help author, announced Thursday that she is running for Democratic National Committee chair.
In an open letter to DNC members posted online, Williamson laid out the party’s plans for moving forward after losing the White House and Senate in November. She urged Democrats to sign a petition allowing them to participate in a candidate forum in January.
DNC members will elect the party’s new leader and other officers at their winter meeting on February 1st. There will also be a series of four forums where DNC leadership candidates can talk to party members and explain their vision for the Democratic Party.
“As Chairman, I will work to overhaul our party,” Williamson wrote in his pitch to DNC members. “For if we want to have a new president within four years and a new parliament within two years, we must immediately begin the task of creating a new party.”
He said that under his plan, Democrats would “listen more to people, make them feel like their thoughts and feelings matter as much as their wallets,” and “make clear decisions for American workers.” He said that he would become a party that “defends the opposition.” Mr Williamson said the party would have the “humility to look in the mirror and realize we need to reinvent ourselves”.
“We don’t just fight. We inspire. We increase patriotic enthusiasm and create a connection in Americans’ hearts to our nation’s great historical heritage,” she said. Williamson, 72, was seeking the Democratic presidential nomination in 2020 and 2024. She was the first Democrat to run for president in the most recent election and the first primary challenger to President Biden.

After the primary ended in June, she posted on social media that she was “no longer the Democratic presidential candidate.” Biden withdrew from the race in July, and Democrats ultimately nominated Vice President Kamala Harris.
