In response to the backlash, Maharashtra minister Nitesh Rane tried to clarify his remarks, claiming he was simply comparing the treatment of Hindus in Kerala to the treatment of Hindus in Pakistan.

Rane emphasized that while “Kerala is truly part of India,” the declining Hindu population and suspicions of conversion are issues that require attention.

“If the treatment meted out to Hindus in Pakistan is similar to what is happening in India, then action should be taken against the same,” Rane said.

A case needs to be filed against him…Kerala is a secular state. The people of the state have rejected the Bharatiya Janata Party and that is the reason for their dissatisfaction. ”

Congress spokesperson Atul Londe Patil also condemned Nitesh Rane’s comments and questioned how someone who labels a country as ‘Pakistan’ could remain in the cabinet.
