Until Thursday morning, former President Donald Trump was expected to support Lala’s Senate run. But with a twist, Trump chose to support Michael Wayley instead. He is the current RNC Chair.
Trump supports someone else for the Senate
Michael Whatley, 57, is set to announce his Senate run soon, and he will be supported by both Trump and Lara. Lara Trump is married to Eric Trump, and according to Politico reports, she was thinking of running from June.

Trump had encouraged Lara to run after North Carolina Republican Sen. Tom Tillis said he wouldn’t seek reelection. Tillis and Trump didn’t get along well. Tillis was opposed and criticising Trump’s “big beautiful bill,” so Trump wanted to support someone else.
Trump has pledged to support Republicans who will face Tillis in the 2026 primary. Democrats now see Tillis’ retirement as an opportunity to turn the seats upside down, and former Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper is likely to run, according to a Politico report.
Trump is “optimistic” that Whatley’s powerful donor connections will help the GOP win the race. Whatley is from Watauga County, North Carolina, and led the state Republican Party before becoming chairman of the RNC in March 2024.
Lara thought about running before
This is in fact the third time Lara Trump has considered running for the Senate. She considered running first in 2022 when Senator Richard Burr retired, but decided not to.
In 2024, Trump even considered nominating her to fill Marco Rubio’s seat, but was tapped when he became Secretary of State, but dropped the idea. Lara left the role of RNC co-chair in December 2024, making people believe they will definitely run, but Trump immediately said no.

Her sixth Christian pop single came out just three days ago, according to a report by Politico.
