RCB Team Director Mo Bobat revealed why RCB didn’t chase the proven captain at Mega auction last November.
Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) made an incredible move on Thursday in the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL). In opposition to wild speculation about Virat Kohli’s return as RCB skipper, the franchise has named Rajat Patidar as the new leader in the imminent IPL season. Following the big announcement, team director Mo Bobat revealed why RCB didn’t chase the proven captain at Mega auction last November.

The seduction of a two-day auction in Riyadh last year was the person who signed Shreiyas Ayer, KL Rahul and Rishabhupand, as the captain is the biggest concern for most franchises. RCB was also in the franchise that broke up with FAF Du Plessis, who led the team in the past three seasons after Kohli abandoned his leadership role in 2021. It raised major questions and sparked criticism of their auction strategy, but also sparked speculation that Kohli would return as captain in IPL 2025.
Speaking to the media at an event in Bengaluru on Thursday, Bobat said the RCB focused on bringing together winning teams rather than chasing famous players.
“We wanted to focus on building the right team, not just hunting out individuals who could play a leadership role. So for us, prioritizing accordingly and appropriately. We tried to get a team and believed we trusted. There were options inside everyone is good players and I’m sure they’ll do well with their team. So, It was never a pressure point or stress point for their decisions to hunt someone and go for them as captain. “He said.
