Singapore President Tharman Shanmugaratnam on Saturday asserted that India is emerging as a major pole in the global economy and said the country is looking to contribute to the semiconductor ecosystem and aviation connectivity sector. “India wants to be itself a pole in a multipolar world, which is geopolitically true but also economically true. India is emerging as a major pole in the global economy. India is a country we want to cooperate with,” he said while briefing the media at the end of a two-day tour to Odisha. He added: “India is a likely country for Singapore to work with due to its demographics, unique development process and huge potential in export economy.”

“India’s priorities and Singapore’s priorities are also very similar,” the President said, adding, “In line with the priorities established under the India-Singapore Ministerial Roundtable, both governments are committed to developing India’s semiconductor ecosystem.” “Singapore is looking at how that is done.” We are also looking at a new generation of industrial parks that can contribute to the ecosystem, and Sembcorp in particular is very actively exploring potential sites for the development of new industrial parks. ”

Mr. Shanmugaratnam said both countries are also keen on improving skills, which is a key element in securing India’s future.

“Singapore had some experience in this field, so we wanted to participate in the development of India’s skills ecosystem,” he said.

“Sustainability is a top priority for both countries. India is endowed with solar and wind energy and will be an important producer of green ammonia. Therefore, Singapore will support India in developing these areas and green energy. “Building a corridor to Southeast Asia may take more time, but it is a very important goal,” the president said. “Connectivity is key,” he said, adding, “In my talks with the Indian leadership, we shared their enthusiasm for expanding the Air Services Agreement, which was last revised nearly a decade ago.”

Expanding air services agreements will benefit both the country and the economy, he added.
