IIT Madras establishes AMOLED research center to boost India’s display manufacturing industry

Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has been launched.AMOLED Research Center‘(arc), a national center of excellence dedicated to developing the next generation of talent. AMOLED display For smartphones, tablets, smartwatches and other wearables.

The ‘AMOLED Research Center’ (ARC), recognized as a National Center of Excellence, is funded by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), Government of India, Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO), and Tata Sons. .

The center aims to contribute to the national efforts towards establishing a display manufacturing industry in India. Researchers from various fields will collaborate on display development. The center includes a state-of-the-art cleanroom with manufacturing and characterization tools.

On December 21, 2024, MeitY Secretary Shri S. Krishnan formally inaugurated the Center at IIT Madras campus in the presence of IIT Madras Director Prof. V. Kamakoti and Principal Researcher Dr. Devdatta Ray. ) AMOLED Research Center (ARC), IIT Madras, Dr. G. Rajeswaran (Co-Principal Investigator), Dr. Soumya, Mr. Dutta (Co-PI) and Dr. G. Venkatesh (Co-PI), IIT Madras, and Smt. Asha Nangia. , group coordinator. Shri Ravinder Kumar Meena, Scientist, MeitY. Dr. Amitava Majumdar of Grantwood Ltd. Faculty, researchers and students at IIT Madras.

Shri S. Krishnan, Secretary, Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), Government of India, said at the launch event. It is one of the National Center of Excellence (CoE) funded by the Government of India. The center is working to develop manufacturing technology for AMOLED displays that can be used in digital devices such as smartphones, smartwatches and tablets. This new method, based on “economies of speed”, enables a modular microfactory concept in the production of these devices. ”

In his speech, Professor V. Kamakoti, Director, IIT Madras, said, “AMOLED Research Center is a unique center in India to develop next generation AMOLED displays. The global AMOLED display business is currently worth approximately $15 billion and is expected to continue to grow. AMOLED Research Center will innovate new technologies to develop AMOLED displays for Indian and global markets.”

At ARC, scientists are developing innovative patterning methods for AMOLED display manufacturing. This new approach is expected to reduce capital investment costs in display manufacturing. The goal of this research center is to establish technology that facilitates the development of modular display manufacturing equipment (microfactories). It has the ability to accommodate both existing and future growth processes. The center is currently focusing on small displays found in tablets, smartphones, and smartwatches.
