Chinese artificial intelligence startup Deepseek has made headlines to break through the global download charts after releasing its latest model, the Deepseek R1 in January. The company claims that the latest AI models are developed in technology developed by OpenAI from a capacity standpoint, making them low cost to create.
Deepseek reportedly spent only $6 million on final training on the V3 model using NVIDIA’s H800 chip. Many argued that the $6 million figure could only refer to the final stage, but more investment is required in the early stages, including experimental execution and model architecture decisions.
Sam Altman on Deepseek’s low-cost training
Openai CEO Sam Altman is now breaking silence over the claims and taking Jibe indirectly with his company’s Chinese competitor. Speaking to the Hindustan Times during an ongoing trip to India, Altman unveiled a wide range of issues focused on artificial intelligence, including the right price for Deepseek.
In response to questions asking about his response to news about Chinese AI models and his responses about lower training costs, Altman said: “I was very skeptical of the cost count. There are some zeros that are missing. But yeah, it’s a good model and you need to make a better model.
This statement contrasted with his previous comments, in which he praised Deepseek’s R1 model. Openai CEO challenges the official X-handle, feels excited about competition and looks forward to lifting new releases to compete with low-cost Chinese AI models.
The Deepseek R1 is an impressive model, particularly focusing on what we can offer for the price. Obviously, it’s legal to offer a much better model and have a new competitor! We’ll raise some releases.
