In competition with Apple, Chinese tech giant Huawei Technologies has adopted an unconventional approach to promoting the sale of modern smartwatches by registering it as a medical device.

Huawei’s Watch D2, launched in November 2024, gained great traction in China as it realized that buyers could claim their medical insurance and eliminated the need to pay out of pocket money. .

Since its launch, smartwatches have been in high demand at various pharmacies across China, with some even reporting that customers are placing pre-orders as stocks are selling out rapidly.

On Chinese social media platforms such as Xiaohongshu, users share how the blood pressure tracking feature of Huawei Watch qualifies for registration as a medical device. As a result, customers do not have to pay themselves, as costs are deducted from funds deposited in individual accounts under the state health insurance scheme. China.
