Creating interdisciplinary AI expertise

Teachers in all fields are encouraged to update their curriculum with AI in mind. This is supported by grants that encourage creative use of AI Makerspace in the course. This initiative reinforces a major trend that emphasizes that the same applies to education and proficiency, just as business strategy is an AI strategy.

To make AI education truly comprehensive, Georgia Tech offers AI miners open to all majors. One outstanding project developed by biomedical engineering students, PatchPals uses injury images to automate foam cutting for wound care. Patch pulses, a traditionally manual process, allow nurses to photograph the wound, outline it, and cut the device to accurate dimensions. “The AI ​​Makerspace resources allowed us to train our models well, and we were much faster than we had to use publicly available methods,” explains PatchPals team member Aya Samadi.

In the energy sector, students tackle AI sustainability challenges. Datacenters are projected to consume nearly 10% of US energy by the end of the decade, so students are developing AI Makerspace digital twins to analyze energy consumption and environmental impact . “Essentially, cutting-edge AI data centers are being tested at your fingertips,” notes Assistant Professor Divya Mahajan. “It’s all hand-on decks that solve these critical AI efficiency and sustainability issues. Students need to be at the forefront of finding solutions as these challenges are heavily affected.”
