Katie Sadleir, CEO of Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF), said hosting the 2030 CWG is a step in the right direction for India to pursue its ambitions to host the 2036 Olympics. Speaking on the second day of the Times Group ET Now Global Business Summit on Sunday, February 16th, Sadleir said hosting the Olympics was a major achievement for any country.
“Hosting the Olympics is an incredible achievement, and hosting the 2030 Commonwealth Games in India will be the right step towards that goal,” she said. The CGF CEO’s comments come against the backdrop of informal debates between the federal and the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) over the possibility of hosting the 2030 CWG.
India has officially placed an intention to hold the 2036 Olympics together with the International Olympic Committee (IOC). It will take a year for the official decision, but India wants to make the event a nation-wide and national. Sadreia also said she is optimistic that India will become one of the top 10 performers at the Olympics in the near future.
“India’s work is transformative. With proper leadership, infrastructure and passion, India is on track to become one of the top 10 countries in the Olympics,” she said.
“Sports is extremely important in creating a country’s image,” she said. “Being recognized as a sports powerhouse will increase the country’s influence on the world stage.” India hosts Commonwealth Games (CWG) in its first and only time so far in 2010. .
Sadrah praised India’s growing sports infrastructure, saying it is a sign of the country’s commitment to international competition.
