Government notifies export procedures for certified organic products

According to the notification, the government has established procedures for exporting certified organic products and required compulsory certification under the National Organic Production Program (NPOP) for such shipments.

In a public notice, the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) states that products can only be exported as “organic products” if they are accompanied by a transaction certificate (TC) issued by a certification body accredited by a national certification body. said it would be allowed. Such items are managed under the Department of Commerce’s NPOP.

India has set a goal of increasing organic food exports to $2 billion by 2030.

It added that export of these goods will only be certified if they are produced, processed, packed and labeled according to the standards set by the NPOP.

“The export procedures for certified organic products have been notified,” it added.

The revised NPOP will take effect 180 days after January 5th.

APEDA (Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority), a division of the Ministry of Commerce, has revised the NPOP regulations to make them more farmer-friendly and help India promote organic food exports.

The National Organic Production Program (NPOP) sets standards for organic production and procedures for accreditation of certification bodies.

These standards and procedures have been developed in harmony with other international standards regulating the import and export of organic products.

Between April and November of this financial year, these exports increased by about 40% to Rs 456 crore. In 2023-24, it was 495 million rupees.

He said that in order to promote Indian organic products in the global market, APEDA is facilitating the participation of many companies in ‘BioFach’, the largest organic food trade fair held in Nuremberg, Germany. . The four-day fair will begin on February 11th.

The main export items include grains, millet, processed foods, tea, spices, dried fruits, sugar, medicinal plant products, pulses, coffee, oil cake/meal, and oilseeds.
