What is the efficiency of government?

The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) is a temporary US federal division led by Elon Musk, seeking to modernize federal technology and maximize government efficiency. This was prepared by a US enforcement order on January 20, 2025. Donald Trump. The order reorganized its existing agency, the US Digital Services, and renamed it US Doge Services.

What are the government’s efficiency goals?

Doge aims to modernize federal technology, maximize government efficiency, dismantle bureaucracy, reduce regulations, reduce wasteful spending, and restructure federal agencies. Agency manager Elon Musk warns of large layoffs and potential closures of certain departments and agencies.

Is the government’s efficiency department at the cabinet level?

No, Doge is not a cabinet-level department. The division is scheduled to end on July 4th, 2026.

Government Efficiency (DOGE), Temporary US Federal Sector; Elon Musk was previously known as the US Digital Services (USDS). Press in the US on January 20th, 2025. Donald Trump issued an executive order reorganizing the USDS and changed its name to the US Doge Service. It is more commonly known as government efficiency, or Doge. Trump’s order has appointed Doge to “modernize federal technology and software to maximize government efficiency and productivity.” Doge is not a cabinet-level division and is expected to end on July 4, 2026.

Doge background and creation

Did you know?

Doge is considered to be a reference to Dogecoin, Musk’s favorite cryptocurrency.

The Doge idea first came to mind in the 2024 presidential election, when Musk proposed an audit of the federal government. The proposal was accepted by Trump and Republican candidates. After winning in November, Trump announced he was planning to create a Doge. Doge is led by Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy. However, Ramaswamy ultimately chose not to participate. According to Trump, the new agency will “help dismantle government bureaucracy, reduce excessive regulations, reduce wasteful spending and restructure federal agencies.” Musk later insisted through Doge that he wanted to cut $2 trillion from the federal budget.

On his first day in office, Trump signed an executive order in 2014 that transformed USDS created to support federal agencies in digital services. Critics questioned Doge’s lack of transparency, particularly the division’s classification as “special government officials,” a way in which the department attempted to withhold names of staff members, including masks. The designation is for temporary employers who are excluded from certain ethics and conflict of interest rules. Additionally, the Trump administration would later classify Doge documents as presidential records, preventing them from being made public to information until at least 2034. A White House spokesman argued that these actions were necessary to achieve Doge’s goals.

Activities

Shortly after the establishment of the department, Doge employees began accessing government agencies with the stated goal of cutting costs and halting what Musk and Trump identified as left-wing policies. Musk warned of large layoffs and potential closures of certain agencies and departments. The first organization to face the chopping block was the United States International Development Organization (USAID), which is involved in development and humanitarian efforts around the world. Trump and his supporters have been critical of foreign aid, and Musk has claimed without evidence that the agency is a “criminal organisation.” USAID supporters point out that it is an important tool for US soft power. In late January 2025, Doge was granted access to the Treasury payment system. This distributes trillions of dollars to Americans every year. Opponents cited privacy issues and expressed concern that even those approved by Congress could halt payments. The move sparked lawsuits – as was the case for most of Doge’s activities.
